We all see and know the commercials, almost every day, auto insurance and how much you can save by switching auto insurance. If you watch TV at all you know the slogans “Saving money with Geico, so easy a caveman can do it.” “Switch to E-Surance and get animated about car insurance in Los Angeles.” And of course probably the most famous, “Like a good neighbor State Farm is there.” That is only three of the many auto insurers, others like TheGeneral.com, Allstate, Nationwide, and Liberty Mutual just to name some of the most well known.

Consumer advocates support the plan as well, as car insurance companies in Southern California have long erred on the side of over-billing in order to mitigate risk. That is, these companies are much more likely to bill you at the upper end of their estimate of how much you may drive in one year in order to protect themselves from the risk of having you on the road far more than they expect. With a transmitter relaying your exact mileage, policies will be less cookie-cutter and will more accurately reflect a person’s actual time spent on the road. It should be noted that pay-as-you-drive policies will not be required, so a driver with a long commute may choose to stick with a more conventional policy. It should also be mentioned that these transmitters will not relay a driver’s location, an action that would typically set off alarms with consumer advocates due to the inherent invasion of privacy.

Finally, an often-overlooked aspect of this debate could be one of the most basic, and that is the impact this could have on personal injury. Along with fewer harmful emissions, fewer drivers on the road should mean fewer accidents, and therefore fewer injuries. Certainly an idea that can be supported by all. For more information on this interesting debate, there is a great article at latimes.com to check out.

Collision insurance, as the name would imply, provides coverage for the insured vehicle should it be involved in an accident, subject to a deductible. The function here, obviously, is to pay for the repair of the vehicle, or to provide a cash settlement should the vehicle be deemed unrepairable. A confident driver may consider this coverage superfluous and choose not to register for it, though as previously mentioned, most lenders will demand that this be included in a policy.

Comprehensive auto insurance is a less black and white, as it covers damage caused by reasons other than a collision with another vehicle. Often, this can take place as a result of flood, theft, vandalism, impacts with animals, etc. A great deal of litigation has come from the interpretations of what should fall under this umbrella. Suffice to say, it is generally a good idea to pay for comprehensive insurance, even if you are not required to do so.

If you’ve made it this far, it’s because you’re looking for information about Los Angeles car insurance. As in most states, auto insurance in California is required by law, which should come as no surprise. Unfortunately, the greater Los Angeles area is one of the most expensive areas in the country to insure an automobile, with average annual premiums topping $3,000 — way higher than the California state average of just under $1,800.

There are a couple of ways to go about paying for your car insurance. Typically, companies will charge monthly, bi-annually, or annually. If you don’t already know this, it might be helpful to be aware of the fact that a willingness on your part to pay for a longer time period up front will lower your average expense. That is, if your monthly payment, or “premium,” was $100, an insurance company might be willing to sell you six months of coverage for $570 up front, or better yet, a year’s worth of coverage for $1,100 if you can pay all at once. If you don’t have the cash in the bank, this is a non-issue.

There are a number of categories that insurance companies can place you in to better assess how “risky” you are for them to insure. Age is a big one. The older you are, the better you are at driving a car. Therefore, you will be charged less for insurance. Gender is a trickier one, but the bottom line is that Men engage in riskier behavior on the road, and are therefore more likely to get into an accident. For this reason, men must pay more for insurance. Similarly, unmarried people are more likely than married folks to be out driving at night, when the majority of accidents happen. As you might now expect, single people pay more for insurance than married folks. Finally, the type of vehicle you drive, and how much you drive it play into how much you can expect to pay for insurance. Sports car drivers pay more for insurance than station wagon drivers just as people who drive 50,000 miles per year pay more than people driving 12,000 miles per year.
